Ethiopia has appointed a new ambassador to Somalia, marking a significant step toward mending strained ties between the two neighboring countries.

Suleiman Dedefo presented his credentials to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday, signaling renewed diplomatic engagement after months of tension.

The dispute began when Ethiopia signed a controversial deal with Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia, seeking access to the sea. Somalia, which views Somaliland as part of its territory, condemned the agreement as a violation of its sovereignty.

Relations further deteriorated in April 2024 when Somalia expelled Ethiopia’s ambassador and declared him persona non grata.

However, tensions have since eased following mediation efforts led by Turkey. In December 2024, leaders of both nations signed the Ankara Declaration—a Turkish-brokered agreement that de-escalated hostilities and outlined steps for further dialogue, including talks on Ethiopia’s pursuit of sea access.

The new ambassadorial appointment is seen as a positive signal that the two countries are committed to rebuilding diplomatic ties.
