The Enugu State Government has demolished a Smart Green School building in Mbu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, following the discovery of structural defects and substandard construction work.

Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, who addressed journalists during the demolition, said the building was condemned after a thorough inspection by state engineers and project managers, led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

The inspection revealed significant cracks and other defects, despite earlier directives for the contractor to make corrections.

“The contractors gave false assurances about complying with standards, breaching the state government’s trust,” Obeagu said. “As a result, the governor not only ordered the demolition but also terminated the contract immediately.”

He noted that the Isi-Uzo Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Works, has since taken over the site and is conducting further integrity tests on the remaining structures to ensure safety and quality.

Obeagu highlighted that the demolished school is one of the 260 Smart Green Schools being constructed across the state, alongside 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres—part of over 1,500 active projects under the Governor Peter Mbah-led administration.

He stressed that the government’s swift response sends a clear message of zero tolerance for substandard work and sharp practices. “This action underscores Governor Mbah’s commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure and protecting the integrity of critical projects, especially the Smart Green Schools initiative, which remains a top priority,” he added.
