England staged a sensational comeback and triumphed in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout to defeat Sweden and book their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2025.
Trailing 2-0 with just 11 minutes left in regulation time, the Lionesses clawed their way back into the match in Zurich.
Lucy Bronze gave England hope with a powerful header from Chloe Kelly’s cross, before 17-year-old Michelle Agyemang showed remarkable composure to equalize from close range minutes later.
With no winner after extra time, the match went to penalties — and drama ensued. Sweden converted just two of their seven spot-kicks, with England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton making two vital saves.
Swedish keeper Jennifer Falk kept her side in the contest with four saves of her own but missed the opportunity to win it when her own penalty flew over the bar.
Bronze, taking England’s seventh penalty, fired her effort into the top corner to give her team the lead. Moments later, Sweden’s Smilla Holmberg blazed her shot over, sealing victory for Sarina Wiegman’s side.
The defending champions will now face Italy in the semi-finals on Tuesday, 22 July at 20:00 BST, as they continue their quest for back-to-back European titles.
