England overcame two lightning delays to secure a convincing victory over the United States in a one-off Test match in Washington, ending their summer tour unbeaten.

The match at Audi Field was disrupted by nearly two hours of weather-related stoppages. Kick-off was delayed by an hour due to lightning strikes in the area, and play was paused again in the 29th minute for another 40 minutes when fresh reports of lightning forced officials to clear the field and direct fans to seek shelter.

Despite the interruptions, Steve Borthwick’s side dominated proceedings, running in six tries to complete a perfect three-win tour, following earlier victories over Japan and Argentina.

England took control early, with Curtis Langdon and Luke Northmore crossing during a period when the USA were reduced to 14 men after Chris Hilsenbeck was sent to the sin bin.

Cadan Murley added a third try just before half-time, extending England’s lead.

After the break, Jack van Poortvliet and Harry Randall added to the scoreline, with Randall’s dummy leading to a brilliant solo try.

Gabriel Oghre completed the try tally before Shilo Klein scored a late consolation for the hosts.

There were several debutants for England, including Sale full-back Joe Carpenter, Bath centre Max Ojomoh, Gloucester lock Arthur Clark, and fly-half Charlie Atkinson.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso also returned after serving a two-match ban, with Borthwick making 12 changes to the side that beat Argentina in San Juan.

Earlier at the same venue, the USA women’s team edged Fiji 31-24 in another tightly contested match.

This summer has seen several sporting events in the U.S. disrupted by severe weather. Washington, one of 27 cities vying to host matches during the 2031 Men’s and 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cups, has now joined a growing list of venues affected by lightning-related delays, including cities like Orlando and Charlotte during last month’s FIFA Club World Cup.
