Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has approved an upward review of the minimum wage for state civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000.
The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebe, announced the development on Thursday after the State Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki.
Omebe explained that the decision reflects the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers across the state. He added that the new wage takes immediate effect and applies to all categories of workers.
“This is not a political statement, as this government does not toy with workers’ welfare,” the commissioner said.
He further disclosed that the state government has cleared pension arrears and gratuities of retirees from the state’s creation in 1996 to date. He noted that the verification of retirees in Local Government Areas is ongoing, after which payments will be made.
Assuring residents of the governor’s commitment to their wellbeing, Omebe said the administration is guided by the “people’s charter of needs” principle, ensuring policies address the genuine needs of the people.
He added that the Executive Council also deliberated and approved the implementation of the new wage structure for affected permanent secretaries and directors.
