Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have once again asserted their dominance in African basketball by winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title, defeating Mali in a thrilling final on Sunday at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory marks a historic fifth consecutive championship for the Rena Wakama-led team — making Nigeria the first nation to achieve such a feat in the tournament’s history.
Even more impressively, D’Tigress have remained unbeaten in Afrobasket competition since October 2, 2015.
The final was tightly contested in the first half, with Mali taking an early lead (26–21) before Nigeria leveled the game at halftime (41–41).
A dominant third quarter gave D’Tigress a five-point edge, which they extended in the final period with a stellar defensive performance, eventually sealing a 14-point win.
The triumph comes just days after a gritty semi-final win over Senegal, where D’Tigress rallied in the fourth quarter to secure a hard-fought victory.
With this win, Coach Rena Wakama claims her second title in as many attempts, continuing her trailblazing journey as the first female coach to win the tournament.
