The ongoing diphtheria outbreak in Katsina State has put the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Katsina, under severe pressure as a surge in suspected and confirmed cases pushes its children’s ward beyond capacity.
The hospital management disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the steady influx of patients referred from health facilities across the state had resulted in severe overcrowding and overstretched bed spaces.
The management described the situation as an unprecedented burden, particularly on the children’s ward, where healthcare workers are struggling to attend to the rising number of critically ill children requiring urgent medical care.
Despite the pressure, the hospital said it remained committed to providing timely and quality healthcare services to all affected patients.
It said efforts were underway to accommodate and manage the increasing number of patients despite inadequate bed spaces.
The hospital also commended its healthcare workers for their dedication and resilience, saying their efforts had remained critical to ensuring that critically ill children received lifesaving treatment under difficult conditions.
FTH Katsina further called for stronger collaboration among health institutions, government agencies and other stakeholders involved in the outbreak response.
It stressed that a coordinated approach was necessary to contain the disease and protect vulnerable children.
The hospital said it remained committed to supporting efforts to control the outbreak and urged all relevant stakeholders to work together to effectively manage the situation.
The management, however, did not disclose the number of patients currently admitted or the total number of confirmed cases recorded in the state.
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Primary Healthcare Agency is expected to provide an update on the outbreak during a press briefing scheduled for Sunday, 30 August 2026, at its Primary Healthcare Coordination Centre.
The briefing is expected to provide details on the current status of the outbreak and measures being taken by health authorities to contain its spread across the state.
