Congo Opposition Leader Mbouity Abducted in Brazzaville

Editor

Lassy Mbouity, the prominent opposition figure and presidential hopeful for Congo’s March 2026 elections, was abducted last Sunday in Brazzaville by masked, armed men, just days after narrowly surviving an assassination attempt.

Mbouity leads the opposition party Les Socialistes Congolais, whose members are pointing fingers at the government, describing the abduction as politically motivated.

“We are convinced the dictatorial regime in Brazzaville is behind this,” said Martial Mbourangon Pa’nucci, the party’s spokesperson.

“This isn’t the first time he’s been targeted. The men who came to his home were masked, armed, and used an unmarked vehicle — classic signs of a politically driven kidnapping. We will continue mobilizing support across the country and the diaspora.”

The incident has sparked outrage among Congo’s opposition groups. Multiple parties have issued a joint statement condemning what they describe as a blatant act of political repression.

“This cowardly act represents an alarming escalation in the regime’s use of terror, intimidation, and human rights violations,” said Clément Mierassa, leader of the Congolese Social Democratic Party.

“It is a direct violation of Article 9 of the October 25, 2015 Constitution. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Lassy Mbouity.”

Congo’s Human Rights Organization has echoed these concerns, calling on international diplomats and global institutions to intervene and help secure Mbouity’s release.

As of now, the Congolese government has not issued a response to the allegations.
