The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) is pleased to announce that its Plant One Million Trees (P1MT) campaign has crossed the milestone of 1,000 trees planted, marking an important step towards promoting environmental sustainability and strengthening climate action across Northern Nigeria.

CITAD expresses its sincere appreciation to all its partners, volunteers, institutions, media organisations, communities and individuals who have contributed to the progress of the campaign through tree planting, mobilisation, advocacy and other forms of support.

We particularly acknowledge the contributions of the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), and the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP) for their support and collaboration.

We also appreciate our media partners, including Premier Radio, Arewa Radio, Guarantee FM and Freedom Radio, for helping to raise awareness, mobilise public participation and promote environmental responsibility across Kano and Jigawa states.

CITAD recognises the dedication of every volunteer, community member and tree planter who has taken practical steps to support the campaign. Crossing 1,000 trees is an encouraging milestone, but it also reinforces the need to move beyond symbolic planting activities towards sustained community participation, tree survival and long-term environmental impact.

The P1MT campaign seeks to plant one million indigenous trees across the 19 northern states of Nigeria by September 2027, with particular attention to vulnerable and environmentally fragile areas. The initiative is designed to contribute to climate change mitigation, restore degraded landscapes, combat desertification, protect biodiversity and promote healthier, more sustainable communities.

CITAD emphasises that planting trees is only the beginning. Ensuring that planted trees survive requires regular watering, monitoring, community ownership and collective responsibility. The campaign therefore encourages individuals, institutions and communities to take responsibility for nurturing and protecting the trees planted in their areas.

As the campaign gathers momentum, CITAD calls on federal and state governments, local government authorities, development partners, philanthropies, corporate organisations and other well-meaning individuals to support the initiative and help expand its reach and impact.

Support is welcome in various forms, including the provision of seedlings, technical and financial assistance, monitoring support, participation in tree planting, and sustained care for planted trees. Partners are also encouraged to support community mobilisation and the establishment of practical mechanisms for tracking tree growth and survival.

CITAD believes that addressing climate change and environmental degradation requires collective action beyond government and institutional commitments. Communities, young people, civil society organisations, businesses and individuals all have a role to play in protecting the environment for present and future generations.

The organisation reaffirms its commitment to working with partners and communities to ensure that the P1MT campaign delivers measurable and lasting environmental benefits.

Every tree planted must be a tree nurtured and protected. Together, we can build a greener and more resilient Northern Nigeria.

Plant. Protect. Restore.
