The Community Initiative for Climate Engagement and Development (CICEND) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose vision for sustainable development and climate resilience shaped Nigeria’s environmental policies.

In a condolence statement issued on Wednesday, the Executive Director of CICEND, Isiyaku Ahmed, noted that Buhari’s administration demonstrated a significant commitment to climate action.

“From Nigeria’s early endorsement of the Paris Agreement in 2015 to the establishment of the National Council on Climate Change in 2021, President Buhari consistently prioritized environmental governance as a key element of national development,” he said.

He recalled that in 2021, the Buhari administration launched the Nigeria Climate Change Policy and Response Strategy, laying a policy foundation for coordinated mitigation and adaptation efforts.

In 2022, he approved Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which aimed to shift the country towards low-carbon energy sources while supporting economic growth.

He further highlighted Buhari’s administration’s investment in the Great Green Wall Initiative, a flagship project aimed at combating desertification and restoring degraded lands across Northern Nigeria, and his support for community-based renewable energy solutions and sustainable agricultural practices.

“As an advocate for global climate cooperation, Buhari consistently represented Nigeria at international climate summits, reinforcing the country’s role in global environmental diplomacy,” he added.

While mourning his death, CICEND praised the late president’s enduring contributions to climate resilience and development, expressing hope that his policies would inspire future climate action in the country.

CICEND extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the Federal Government, Katsina State Government, and Nigerians at large, praying for peace and comfort during this period of national mourning.
