Burna Boy emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), which wrapped up in Lagos on Sunday night, clinching multiple honours at the continent-wide ceremony.

The Grammy-winning star took home the coveted Album of the Year award for his latest project, No Sign of Weakness.

He also shared the Best African Collaboration prize with rising Nigerian artiste Shallipopi, who was further impressed by winning Song of the Year for his viral hit Laho.

The week-long AFRIMA celebration, judged by a diverse panel of music experts from across Africa and the diaspora, brought together key industry players and culminated in a grand finale that highlighted Nigeria’s dominance on the African music scene.

Rema topped the awards tally on the night, winning three major categories: Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African Artiste in R&B and Soul.

Other Nigerian acts also made strong showings. Yemi Alade won Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series or Documentary for her song You Are from the animated series Iyanu, while veteran rapper Phyno was named Best African Artiste in African Hip-Hop.

Emerging talents were equally recognised, with Qing Madi crowned Most Promising Artiste of the Year and Chella winning African Fans’ Favourite.

Despite Nigeria’s strong presence, the awards celebrated excellence from across the continent. Senegal’s Bakhaw Dioum won Songwriter of the Year, while Algeria’s DJ Moh Green claimed DJ of the Year, beating several prominent South African DJs.

Ghana’s Wendy Shay was named Best Female Artiste in West Africa, South Africa’s Nontokozo Mkhize won Best Female Artiste in Southern Africa, and Tanzania’s Juma Jux emerged Best Male Artiste in Eastern Africa.

The strong performance of Nigerian artists once again highlighted the growing global influence of Afrobeats.

The genre’s fusion of African rhythms and Western sounds continues to attract international audiences, with Burna Boy remaining one of its leading ambassadors.

His Album of the Year win further cements his status as a key figure in the global Afrobeats movement.
