The Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board (SPHCMB) in its efforts towards facilitating the delivery of quality health services at all levels of care continued to renovate Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities to ensure it meets the requisite standards.
Recently, the board awarded a contract for the renovation and upgrade of an additional 11 PHCs in the State.
The Director General of the Board, Dr. Mohammed Nasir Mahmoud, disclosed this during a 2 Day BHCPF DFF Utilization and financial management review session held in Bafra, Hotel, Kaduna with support from FCDO Lafiya Program.
He said Kano being the state with highest number of local government areas and political wards is getting the largest share of BHCPF funds in the country.
Dr. Mahmoud revealed that Kano is getting BHCPF funds through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and National Primary Healthcare Management Agency (NPHCDA) gateways.
He said the workshop was organized to review DFF utilization and financial management systems ranging from access to the funds, utilization, accountability, retirement, and challenges, and share learning.
Dr. Mahmoud appreciated the Lafiya Program and UNICEF for their support of SPHCMB.
The Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) scheme
The BHCPF is a health intervention scheme established under the National Health Act (2014) to provide basic health care services to the poor and vulnerable. The BHCPF program contributes to initiatives towards actualising Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all and facilitation of availability of one functional PHC per political ward.
Furthermore, it aims to reduce the maternal mortality rate by 31% (from 576 to 400 per 100,000 live births), neo maternal rate by 33% (from 39 to 26 per 1,000 live births) and under-five mortality rate by 29% (from 120 to 85 per 1,000 live births) with 50% of BHCPF.
The purpose of the BHCPF is to ensure the provision of basic health care package of health services to all Nigerians through National Health Insurance Scheme NHIS and state Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency KSCHMA.
Another purpose of the programme is “Strengthening the Primary Health Care (PHC) system through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) with 45% of BHCPF.
