Benue State Government has directed Benue Links Nigeria Limited, its state-owned transport company, to cut fares by 50% for Persons with Special Needs (PWSNs) in a bid to promote inclusivity in the transportation sector.
The directive, announced in Makurdi by the company’s General Manager, Comrade Alexander Fanafa, reflects Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s commitment to supporting people with disabilities and ensuring their access to affordable mobility.
“The Governor has been proactive in addressing the transportation needs of our people.
“This directive ensures that PWDs traveling with Benue Links will pay only half of the regular fare, giving them a true sense of belonging in society,” Fanafa said.
Fanafa stressed that the move was more than an act of goodwill; it was a clear demonstration of the government’s resolve to build an inclusive transport system.
He added that PWSNs would also receive preferential treatment while traveling with the company.
Highlighting the company’s growth under the current administration, Fanafa recalled that when Governor Alia assumed office, Benue Links was struggling with inadequate vehicles, relying mostly on leased buses.
In November 2023, the Governor donated 100 buses, enabling the company to expand its services.
Since then, Benue Links has acquired 10 additional buses and 10 sedan cars for taxi operations.
According to Fanafa, the increased fleet and competitive pricing have not only boosted the company’s operations but also forced private operators to lower their fares, benefiting all commuters.
He expressed confidence that the 50% fare reduction would significantly ease the financial burden on PWSNs.
“This initiative will make a real difference in the lives of persons with special needs. We are fully committed to implementing the Governor’s directive and ensuring inclusivity in our transport services,” he said.
