Barcelona have removed goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from his role as first-team captain following disciplinary proceedings linked to a dispute over his medical data.

The 33-year-old, recovering from back surgery in late July, reportedly refused to allow the club to share his medical details with La Liga — information that could influence Barcelona’s ability to register new players based on his injury layoff.

Ter Stegen recently stated on social media that he would be out for three months, while La Liga’s long-term injury classification requires a minimum four-month absence.

Until the matter is resolved, vice-captain Ronald Araújo will assume captaincy duties.

Ter Stegen, who joined Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, has made over 400 appearances, winning the Champions League and six La Liga titles.

The club’s summer recruits include goalkeeper Joan García from Espanyol and England striker Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United.
