Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a major political shift for one of the party’s most prominent founding members.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of his ward in Jada 1, Adamawa State, Atiku said he was withdrawing his membership from the party with immediate effect.
The letter, which bore his signature and official titles, cited deep dissatisfaction with the current direction of the PDP.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” Atiku wrote.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, expressed appreciation for the opportunities the party had given him over the years.
He acknowledged the roles the PDP played in shaping his political career, including twice fielding him as a presidential candidate.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he stated.
Atiku’s resignation is expected to send ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, as he remains a significant figure in national politics.
Although he did not disclose his next political move, his departure has sparked speculation about possible alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He concluded his letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership success in the future.
Atiku Abubakar, also known as the Waziri of Adamawa, has long been a central figure in Nigerian politics and has previously left and returned to the PDP on multiple occasions.
However, this latest resignation appears more definitive, given the strong language and tone of finality in his letter.
