The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government 14 days to address its long-standing demands or face a nationwide strike.
The ultimatum followed a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, at the University of Abuja, according to a statement signed by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna.
The union’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, release of revitalisation funds for universities, payment of outstanding salary arrears, and creation of a sustainable funding framework for higher education.
ASUU accused the government of consistently neglecting the university system and failing to honour previous agreements.
“If at the end of the 14 days the issues are not addressed, the union may have no choice but to embark on a two-week warning strike, to be followed by a total and indefinite strike,” the statement read.
