The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Yobe State University (YSU) has confirmed that its ongoing strike has not been suspended, citing unmet demands and unfulfilled government promises.

In a statement issued on Sunday, ASUU-YSU Chairperson, Comrade Ahmed Ibrahim Karage, clarified that academic staff remain on strike and will not participate in either physical or virtual classes.

“This is to inform the general public that the strike embarked upon by ASUU-YSU has not been called off,” Karage stated, adding that while some progress has been made, critical issues remain unresolved.

He acknowledged the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment in July 2025, but emphasized that several other demands have yet to be addressed.

Among the outstanding issues are the implementation of academic staff promotions as approved by the university council, payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025, arrears related to the minimum wage adjustment from 2019 to 2024, and the 35–25% salary award for academic staff for 2023–2025. The union is also demanding arrears for the new minimum wage covering January 2024 to June 2025.

Karage assured that the strike will be suspended once a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between ASUU-YSU and the Yobe State Government.

He stressed that the strike is aimed at securing better funding for teaching, research, and staff welfare, and urged the public to support the union’s push for improved conditions in the university system.
