The Arab League held an emergency session in Cairo on Tuesday to address the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, following a request from Palestine amid growing fears of mass starvation affecting over two million residents of the enclave.
Ahmad Abu Holi, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), delivered a stark warning, stating, “Gaza is dying of hunger… A so-called humanitarian city is being prepared — a new city of death and prison under humanitarian labels.”
Abu Holi also condemned the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the Israeli-backed organization that has taken over aid distribution since the end of Israel’s 11-week blockade, accusing it of driving civilians into “killing traps” or leaving them to “die from hunger.”
According to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), more than 1,000 people have died of starvation since the end of May. The World Food Programme also accused Israeli forces of opening fire on Palestinians seeking aid over the weekend — an incident Gaza’s Health Ministry described as one of the deadliest attacks on aid-seekers since the war began.
Jordan’s representative to the Arab League, Amjad Adaileh, voiced solidarity with Gaza, saying, “We will not forget Gaza’s steadfastness — its people are bleeding, suffering, and starving due to 21 months of brutal and continuous violations.”
Multiple human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have accused Israel of deliberately using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza — a charge described by some as a form of genocide.
In earlier summits, Arab League leaders called for heightened international pressure on Israel to end the war and allow unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged territory.
