The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has clarified that local vigilante groups will not participate in election security operations during the November 8 governorship election in the state.

Orutugu made this known on Monday during visits to the Ihiala Area Command and Oraifite Divisions, as part of his ongoing statewide tour to assess security preparedness and engage communities ahead of the poll.

He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring the protection of lives and property, as well as guaranteeing a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process.

According to him, genuine patriotism during elections involves rejecting intimidation, refusing fear-based narratives, and participating freely in the democratic process.

While addressing officers and personnel, the Commissioner urged them to uphold discipline, professionalism, courtesy, and the highest operational standards throughout the election period.

“Policing must remain people-centred, intelligence-driven, and anchored on the protection of human rights,” Orutugu stated.

He noted that the Joint Security Framework in the state remains active and will be strengthened across communities to prevent criminal infiltration and ensure peace before, during, and after the polls.

Orutugu also appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and vigilant, while providing credible information to support ongoing security operations.

“We urge Ndi Anambra to cooperate with security agencies and demonstrate civic responsibility throughout the electoral process,” he added.
