Anambra Approves N4.7bn for Roads, Power Expansion Projects

Anambra State Government has approved contracts worth about N4.7 billion for road construction, electricity expansion, and other key infrastructure projects across the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the approvals were part of resolutions reached during the 23rd State Executive Council meeting held on Monday at the Light House, Awka.

Mefor highlighted the state’s preparations for an extraordinary December celebration tagged “Onwa Dezemba,” with major events scheduled for the Solution Fun City, Awka, and the newly upgraded Ekwueme Square.

Describing the upcoming festivities as “a Christmas unlike any other,” he said the program would feature masquerade displays, Christmas carols, musical concerts, and performances by top Nigerian artistes.

He further affirmed the government’s commitment to awarding infrastructural projects strictly based on strategic importance and priority needs.

Other parts of the statement read:

“At the 23rd Anambra State Executive Council Meeting, the Council received and refined a report on plans to give Ndi Anambra the most memorable December experience ever, branded ‘Onwa Dezemba’.

“The magnificent festivities are planned as a Christmas unlike any other. They will include masquerade festivals, Christmas Carols, and musical fiestas with well-known Nigerian musicians.”

The commissioner listed several projects awarded or approved during the meeting, including:

  1. N87,168,413 for annual insurance premium covering the Light House, Awka, under a five-year agreement.
  2. N171,483,629 for the modification, completion, and upgrade of buildings within the Court of Appeal Complex, Awka.
  3. N330,503,966.57 for rehabilitation of failed portions of Court Road and Obunagu Road, Awka.
  4. N443,408,923.03 for the supply and installation of fire-fighting equipment at the College of Nursing Sciences, Umueze-Isuofia.
  5. N297,904,000 for additional furniture at the Government House Theatre and Multi-purpose Hall, Light House.
  6. N346,871,788 for rehabilitation of failed portions of St. Thomas Aquinas Road and adjoining streets.
  7. N85,311,850.58 for a 32kVA solar power system for the Country Club at Solution Fun City.
  8. N1,773,559,976.65 for the construction of the Ikenga–Isuofia–Igboukwu Discharge Channel.
  9. N90,450,858.84 for the construction of the Solution Park & Pay Garage, Ekwulobia.
  10. N476,326,657.37 for electricity extension to Iyiora Anam and the Zion Ministry Psychiatric and Elderly Hospital, Aguleri.
  11. N240,250,645.24 for installation of a 3-way and 4-way traffic light system at Igwe Orizu Junction and Nnewi Roundabout.

Mefor added that the council reaffirmed support for university autonomy in appointing vice chancellors and welcomed Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, the new Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The government also dismissed rumours about the death of former Governor Willie Obiano, condemning the false reports as “sad and reckless” and expressing gratitude for his good health.
