Preserving Moral Values and Protecting the Minds of Our Young Generation
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,
With due respect and a strong sense of civic and moral responsibility, I am writing concerning widely circulated reports about an extremely lavish birthday celebration allegedly organized in Kano in honor of three young girls, aged 9, 5, and 3.
These reports have generated intense public discussion and concern among citizens across Nigeria, particularly at a time when many families are grappling with hardship, insecurity, and economic strain.
The concern raised by many is not merely about the scale of celebration itself, but about the deeper social and moral implications.
Childhood is a formative stage during which values, priorities, and perceptions of success are shaped.
When children are exposed to displays of extreme luxury and extravagance, it risks nurturing materialistic ideals that may conflict with the virtues of modesty, humility, gratitude, and social responsibility emphasized by our religious teachings and cultural heritage.
Equally troubling is the possibility that such displays may influence other young people to measure worth by wealth or spectacle rather than character, knowledge, and service to society.
If such trends are normalized, they could gradually distort societal values and create unhealthy aspirations among peers who may feel pressured to imitate what they see, even when such lifestyles are beyond their families’ means.
The Hisbah Board was established to promote righteousness, guide society toward moral consciousness, and discourage conduct that could undermine ethical standards.
This situation, therefore, presents an opportunity for the Board to reaffirm its founding mandate, not through harshness or public condemnation, but through wise guidance, education, and principled engagement that protects the moral direction of our youth.
We respectfully urge your office to:
• Provide balanced moral guidance on responsible celebrations
• Encourage parents to model values of modesty and social awareness
• Promote teachings that emphasize character over display
• Address the matter in a manner that educates society while preserving dignity and fairness
This appeal is made not to single out or shame any family, but to safeguard the ethical foundation upon which the future of our younger generation depends.
A timely, thoughtful response from your respected institution would reassure the public that moral leadership remains active, compassionate, and committed to the well-being of society.
May Almighty Allah guide your efforts in protecting our values and shaping a morally upright generation?
Respectfully,
A Concerned Citizen
