Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the deadly attack on Saai community in Mbajir Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, describing the incident as a “senseless assault on innocent citizens” and directing security agencies to launch an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of 1 July, reportedly claimed several lives and left many others with varying degrees of injuries. The assailants were alleged to be terrorists posing as herdsmen.

Reacting to the incident, Governor Alia expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to bereaved families, while praying for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

“My heart goes out to those who lost their loved ones as well as other victims currently receiving medical attention. I stand in solidarity with the entire Saai community during this period of immense grief,” the governor said.

He described the attack as a cowardly attempt to undermine peace and food production in the state, noting that it came at a critical period when farmers had returned to their ancestral lands and were cultivating their crops.

“These enemies of progress have chosen to disrupt the peace and food security of our state by targeting the moment when crops are developing and the hope for a bountiful harvest is high,” he said.

To forestall further attacks, the governor directed all relevant security agencies to immediately deploy additional personnel to Saai and neighbouring communities, intensify efforts to track down and arrest those responsible, and strengthen security around farming communities to ensure uninterrupted agricultural activities.

Governor Alia assured residents that his administration remained committed to protecting lives and property and would not allow criminal elements to force communities off their ancestral lands.

“We will not allow the forces of darkness to drive you away from your lands or dampen your spirits. We are building a Benue where peace and justice prevail, and this setback will only strengthen our resolve,” he said.

He also urged residents of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area and the state at large to remain calm but vigilant, advising them to promptly report suspicious movements and activities to the nearest security agencies.

“We will not rest until peace is fully restored to every corner of our dear state,” the governor added.
