The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused allies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating a covert plan to destabilise Nigeria’s emerging opposition coalition.

In a statement released on Monday, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, alleged that some former ADC state chairmen and senior party officials from the North East and North West have been invited to secret meetings with top Federal Government officials. According to the party, the intent is to intimidate or co-opt them into undermining the coalition’s progress.

“We have credible intelligence that this meeting is not about national security or peacebuilding, but a deliberate effort to weaken the opposition. This is sabotage, not politics,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC claimed the plot is designed to create confusion within the party, delegitimise its new leadership, and derail its growing influence as a rising force in the opposition landscape.

“The July 1st coalition declaration and the unveiling of our leadership on July 2nd have clearly rattled the ruling party,” the statement said. “Instead of addressing the country’s real challenges, some government appointees are focused on undermining democracy and silencing dissent.”

The party described the move as a dangerous slide toward one-party rule, warning that such tactics threaten Nigeria’s multiparty democratic structure. It vowed to resist any attempt to silence or divide the opposition.

“This movement belongs to Nigerians who are tired of manipulation, hardship, and failed promises. We will not allow a handful of desperate individuals to sabotage the people’s desire for credible leadership,” the statement added.

The ADC also urged President Tinubu to intervene and rein in those behind the alleged plot, reminding him of the tolerance shown to the APC during the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“If Jonathan had suppressed opposition the way this administration is doing, there would have been no APC victory in 2015, and President Tinubu would not be in office today,” the party noted.

The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to a united, democratic opposition and pledged to defend Nigeria’s political future through peaceful and constitutional means.
