The Federal Capital Territory buzzed with excitement on Saturday as 250 young chess enthusiasts converged for the Evolve 2.0 Children’s Chess Championship, a grassroots initiative aimed at nurturing future grandmasters and instilling vital life skills in children.

Organised by the Royals Chess Academy, the tournament featured players from schools across Abuja competing in four categories — Under-8, Under-10, Under-13, and Under-16.

Convener and Academy Proprietor, Mr. Johnson Enejison, said the championship was designed to identify talent while promoting discipline, resilience, focus, and critical thinking from an early age.

Participants shared how chess has positively impacted their lives. Twelve-year-old Somtochukwu Okolo credited the game with boosting his mathematics skills, while Jemimah Ugwuocha described it as “a game for young minds” that sharpens strategy. Jaydeen Arosanyin and Osikwe Grace said it enhances problem-solving and makes learning enjoyable.

Parents and coaches echoed these sentiments. Mrs. Taiye Arosanyin noted the game improved her son’s concentration, while coach Mr. Uba Efe said teaching chess builds children’s confidence and analytical ability.
