The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kano State Chapter, has called for concerted efforts to tackle Violence Against Women in Politics (VAWIP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s political participation and ensuring equal opportunities for women to contest elections, contribute to decision-making and participate in governance without intimidation, discrimination or violence.
The Chairperson of NAWOJ Kano, Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, made the call while commending Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN) and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for organising a town hall awareness programme that brought together female stakeholders to discuss barriers to women’s participation in politics.
Kabara stressed that women deserved equal opportunities to participate in the political process and contribute meaningfully to the development of society.
She noted that religious and traditional leaders, political parties, the media, civil society organisations and the general public had important roles to play in promoting inclusive leadership and challenging negative perceptions about women in politics.
The NAWOJ chairperson commended the organisers and participants for their contributions, pledging the association’s continued collaboration through media advocacy, community engagement and public enlightenment.
She said such initiatives were necessary to raise awareness about violence against women in politics, protect women’s rights and encourage more women to participate in democratic processes.
NAWOJ Kano urged all stakeholders to work together to create a safe and supportive political environment where women could participate confidently and contribute to Nigeria’s democratic development ahead of the 2027 elections.
