Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has flagged off a multi-million-naira erosion control project in the Badariya and Dukku Mallah communities of Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, marking a significant step towards addressing persistent environmental challenges threatening lives, property and farmlands in the area.

The flag-off ceremony, held on Wednesday, underscores the state government’s commitment to tackling ecological problems and protecting vulnerable communities from the devastating effects of erosion.

Speaking at the event, Governor Idris expressed confidence that the project, upon completion, would provide a lasting solution to erosion challenges in Badariya and Dukku Mallah, while also enhancing the environmental outlook of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

The governor explained that although the project was not among his campaign promises, his administration considered it necessary to intervene because of its critical importance to the safety, welfare and economic wellbeing of the affected communities.

According to him, the intervention is being implemented through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, a World Bank-assisted programme designed to address environmental degradation and strengthen resilience in vulnerable landscapes.

“The successful completion of this project will significantly reduce erosion problems in the affected communities, protect farmlands and create a more conducive environment for agricultural activities,” the governor stated.

Governor Idris also expressed confidence in the capacity and expertise of the contractor handling the project, describing the company as a reputable multinational firm with specialised experience in erosion control.

“I have confidence in the company handling this project because of its specialisation in erosion control.

“My administration is determined to rescue the people of Dukku Mallah and Badariya from the persistent challenges posed by erosion,” he said.

The governor assured residents that his administration would ensure effective supervision and monitoring of the project to guarantee compliance with approved specifications, quality standards and timely completion.

He reiterated his administration’s determination to execute people-oriented projects that address pressing community needs, improve living conditions and stimulate economic activities across Kebbi State.

Governor Idris further urged residents of the benefiting communities to cooperate fully with the contractor and relevant project officials, while taking collective responsibility for protecting and maintaining the infrastructure after completion.

Residents of the affected communities, who turned out in large numbers for the flag-off ceremony, commended the governor for the intervention, describing it as a timely and significant relief from the persistent threat of erosion to their homes, farmlands and livelihoods.
