Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has challenged members of the State Executive Council (SEC) to intensify their efforts, strengthen accountability and accelerate the implementation of government policies and programs, declaring that the ultimate measure of their performance must be the positive impact of governance on the lives of the people.

He issued the charge on Wednesday while presiding over a meeting of the State Executive Council at the Council Chamber, Government House, Sokoto, where he called for renewed dedication, purposeful leadership and greater commitment to delivering tangible development outcomes across the state.

Aliyu further urged commissioners and other members of the Council to resist complacency and remain firmly focused on the administration’s development objectives, stressing that the responsibility of governance demands consistent performance, prudent management of public resources and a clear commitment to the welfare of the people.

He commended members of the Council for their cooperation and contributions to the implementation of government policies, but maintained that the administration could not afford to rest on its achievements when citizens continued to expect more effective public services, improved infrastructure and better living conditions.

“As a government, we will continue to do our best in providing projects and programmes which have direct bearing on the lives of the citizens,” the governor declared, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to people-centred governance and development initiatives that address the practical needs of residents.

The governor reminded commissioners of the commitments made to the electorate during the electioneering campaign, insisting that the mandate entrusted to the administration must be justified through measurable results, responsive leadership and programmes that deliver meaningful benefits to communities throughout Sokoto State.

He stressed that public office must not be treated as a privilege detached from responsibility, but as a solemn obligation to serve the people. According to him, every ministry must demonstrate the value of its activities through effective implementation of policies, timely execution of projects and improved access to essential public services.

Aliyu also called for stronger coordination among ministries, departments and agencies, urging commissioners to remove administrative bottlenecks, address unnecessary delays and ensure that approved programmes translate into practical outcomes.

He emphasised that effective governance requires more than policy announcements, demanding sustained action, close supervision and accountability at every stage of implementation.

The Governor further underscored the need for collective responsibility within the SEC, noting that the success of the administration’s development agenda depends on the ability of individual ministries to work together towards shared objectives.

He urged political officeholders and public officials to demonstrate discipline, transparency and a common determination to meet the expectations of the electorate.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a more prosperous Sokoto State, Aliyu said government interventions must continue to focus on development priorities capable of improving citizens’ welfare, expanding opportunities and strengthening public service delivery.

He maintained that the administration would remain focused on programmes designed to advance the state’s social and economic development.

He specifically directed Council members to align their activities with the administration’s nine-point SMART Agenda, which serves as the framework for government policies and interventions across critical sectors.

Governor Aliyu stressed the importance of ensuring that projects and programmes under the agenda are implemented with diligence, efficiency and a clear understanding of their intended benefits to the people.

The Council meeting was expected to examine key government policies, ongoing projects and proposed programs, with deliberations aimed at strengthening implementation strategies, improving institutional performance and ensuring that public expenditure produces practical benefits for residents.

The discussions also underscored the importance of effective planning and coordinated action in meeting the state’s development targets.

Aliyu called for divine guidance in the discharge of the Council’s responsibilities, praying that Allah would grant members wisdom and the ability to make decisions that would promote peace, progress and prosperity in Sokoto State.

The governor’s directive places renewed emphasis on performance, accountability and results-oriented leadership at a time when citizens across Nigeria are demanding more responsive governance and greater value from public expenditure.

For Sokoto State, the central challenge remains translating policy commitments and government projects into visible improvements in livelihoods, infrastructure and access to essential services.
