The Civil Society Coalition on Peace, Security and Conflict Resolution (CCSPCR), Jigawa State, has called on Nigerians to make peace, unity, responsible citizenship and good governance central to the nation’s journey beyond 66 years of independence.
The coalition made the call in an Independence Day statement issued on Thursday by Nura Muhammad Esg., Acting Head of Secretariat, on behalf of the Chairman, Comrade Musbahu Basirka.
The CCSPCR said independence should not be viewed merely as an occasion for celebration but as a continuous commitment to peace, justice, unity, responsible citizenship and national development.
It urged Nigerians to reflect on the kind of country they are building and the legacy they intend to leave for future generations.
The coalition particularly called on political actors, traditional and religious leaders, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media, young people and other citizens to work together to protect peaceful coexistence in their communities.
“Politics must never turn neighbours into enemies, and differences must never become a reason for violence,” the coalition said.
It also urged young Nigerians to reject violence, drug abuse, misinformation and political manipulation, while encouraging them to channel their energy towards education, entrepreneurship, innovation, community service and nation-building.
The coalition further encouraged citizens to demand accountability and good governance through peaceful and lawful means, while urging governments and public institutions to remain responsive to the legitimate needs and aspirations of the people.
The CCSPCR described independence as a legacy, peace as a responsibility, democracy as a shared trust and the future as a collective duty.
The coalition wished Nigerians, particularly residents of Jigawa State, a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence Anniversary and prayed for the continued prevalence of peace across the state and the country.
