The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned his position amid growing political tension within the state’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

‎Mrs. Ivy Ebojele, Media aide to the Speaker, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

‎The Speaker’s resignation came against the backdrop of reports that he was facing possible impeachment during Monday’s plenary over alleged political differences with some power brokers in the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

‎Although details surrounding his resignation were still emerging at press time, the development has heightened political tension within the Assembly, with Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, reportedly being positioned to take over as Speaker.

‎Agbebaku, who was elected into the Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the APC in May 2025 while serving as Speaker.

‎At the time, the Speaker reportedly said his decision to join the APC was motivated by the need to retain the benefits and privileges associated with his position as Speaker.
