Moroccan King Mohammed VI has called for accelerating the modernization of the country’s armed forces, saying the development of defence capabilities has become a strategic priority amid evolving regional and international security challenges.
In a speech marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Armed Forces, the Moroccan monarch said military modernisation was no longer optional given the rapid transformations affecting global security and warfare.
King Mohammed VI, who serves as Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, said Morocco’s military strategy was based on improving operational readiness, strengthening defensive capabilities and adapting to emerging forms of conflict.
He stressed the importance of expanding scientific and technological programmes within the military institution, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence, digitalisation and cyber security.
The speech reflected Morocco’s broader efforts to adapt its defence doctrine to changing geopolitical conditions in North Africa and the Sahel region, where concerns over instability, cross-border threats and cyber risks have increasingly shaped regional security discussions.
The King also highlighted the importance of investing in personnel through training and qualification programmes designed to keep pace with scientific and technological developments.
Alongside military affairs, the Moroccan monarch praised the role played by the armed forces in rescue and relief operations during recent floods in western and northern Morocco.
He said emergency interventions helped evacuate residents, provide shelter and medical assistance, and protect infrastructure and property in affected areas, including Ksar El Kebir and parts of the Gharb region.
King Mohammed VI also commended the work of military medical teams deployed to remote areas in provinces including Azilal, Al Haouz and Midelt following severe weather conditions.
On international cooperation, he reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to strengthening military partnerships and supporting regional and international security coordination through bilateral and multilateral cooperation frameworks.
The speech also included several social and welfare measures targeting military personnel and their families.
The King announced plans to establish and renovate military hospitals in Rabat, Meknes, Errachidia and Laayoune, aimed at improving healthcare services for serving and retired members of the armed forces.
He also unveiled a military housing programme that aims to build 60,000 housing units over the next five years, at a rate of 12,000 units annually.
The Moroccan monarch further said military service continued to contribute to strengthening discipline, citizenship and professional skills among young people by providing technical and vocational training linked to labour market demands.
He concluded the address by paying tribute to Moroccan soldiers and members of the armed forces who had died in service, reaffirming the military’s role in safeguarding the country’s unity and stability.
