The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Kano State Chapter, on Sunday celebrated the 2026 International Women’s Day with a lecture on combating violence against women and the distribution of support items to 150 members.

According to a statement by the Comman’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the event was held at the POWA Secretariat, Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano, as part of activities marking this year’s celebration with the theme, “Give to Gain.”

In her address, the Chairperson of POWA in Kano State, Hajia Hadiza Abubakar Bakori, praised the strength, dedication and resilience of women within the police community, stressing the importance of unity and mutual support among members.

Bakori noted that the celebration was an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contributions of women, particularly wives of police officers, in supporting their families and communities.

“Today, we celebrate the remarkable strength, dedication and resilience of every member of POWA, PWA and LAPOWA.

“We celebrate wives supporting their husbands, mothers striving to nurture and guide their children, and women making informed decisions despite obstacles,” she said.

The highlight of the event was a lecture delivered by the Special Assistant to the Kano State Governor on Community Policing, Ambassador Maimuna Umar Sheriff, titled “Combating Violence Against Women.”

In her presentation, Sheriff called for collective action to address violence against women, noting that such violence takes different forms and has far-reaching consequences for individuals and society.

She emphasised the need for education, increased public awareness, strong legal protection and active community participation to promote respect, dignity and safety for women.

As part of the celebration, the association distributed food items and other essential goods to 150 members to support their welfare.

The Kano State Police Command commended the POWA chapter for organising the event and acknowledged the vital role women play within the police community and society at large.

The command also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women.

The association further extended its congratulations to the new POWA President, Mrs. Disu Mutiat Olufumilola, for laying a solid foundation for the continued progress of the organisation.
