Recent findings by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have revealed that no fewer than 614,937 lives were lost to kidnapping across Nigeria within twelve months, with ransom payments reportedly exceeding N2 trillion nationwide.

The figures, described as alarming, point to what observers have termed a grave security crisis and a profound constitutional challenge for the country.

Reacting to the development, the International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust, a human rights organization in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), expressed deep concern over the statistics.

In a statement signed by its Country Director, Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the organization reiterated that the right to life remains sacred and non-negotiable.

IHRC–RFT Expresses Concern Over NBS Figures on Kidnapping Death Toll cited Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees every citizen the right to life, and Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirms that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.

It further stressed the moral implications of the crisis, referencing religious teachings that condemn the unlawful taking of life. It called on relevant authorities to act decisively and transparently to address the situation.

“Leadership is a trust, and there will be a Day of Judgment when every action and inaction will be accounted for,” the statement read.

IHRC–RFT urged the government to prioritize the protection of human life, warning that both history and posterity would judge the handling of the worsening security situation.
