The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced the 2026 annual Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccination exercise, targeting approximately 1.5 million heads of cattle across the state.

The statewide campaign was officially launched in Bunkure Local Government Area.

The campaign was inaugurated by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, represented by Dr. Abubakar from the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology.

Dr. Aliyu disclosed that the vaccination exercise will cover all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State as part of a comprehensive strategy to control and eliminate the disease.

He noted that the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development was established by the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to improve animal health, strengthen livestock production, and safeguard public health across the state.

Dr. Aliyu emphasized that CBPP is a highly contagious and debilitating disease that severely affects cattle productivity, leading to weight loss, reduced milk production, poor meat quality, and, in severe cases, death.

These effects pose serious economic threats to livestock farmers and may indirectly affect food security and public health.

The Commissioner therefore called on livestock farmers, herders, and all stakeholders to fully cooperate with veterinary officials by presenting their animals for vaccination.

He stressed that collective action is critical to successfully curbing the spread of the disease.

Dr. Aliyu further noted that preventing CBPP through vaccination will help ensure the availability of healthy and quality livestock products, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, when demand for safe and wholesome meat increases.

The Commissioner expressed profound gratitude to the Governor for his unwavering support for the Ministry of Livestock Development and for creating a conducive environment that has enabled the successful implementation of livestock development programs across the state.

He then commended Governor Yusuf for the consistent backing and strategic support that have empowered the Ministry to effectively discharge its mandate and safeguard the livestock sector in Kano State.
