A judicial commission of inquiry constituted by the Sokoto State Government has submitted a comprehensive report alleging that more than N117 billion was misappropriated during the eight-year administration of former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

The report, presented on Tuesday to Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto at the Government House, cited alleged non compliance with due process, breaches of extant financial and procurement laws, and abuse of office within the period under review.

The submission marks a major milestone in the state’s accountability and governance reform efforts, and has further intensified national discourse on transparency, public sector reforms, and the fight against corruption.

Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Mu’azu Abdulkadir Pindiga (rtd), said the inquiry was established to objectively examine the conduct of the previous administration using verifiable records, sworn testimonies, and applicable constitutional provisions in the public interest.

Justice Pindiga stated that the commission’s findings pointed to extensive financial irregularities totaling over N117 billion, which he attributed largely to violations of procurement procedures, weak financial controls, and misuse of executive powers.

According to him, the report is divided into five key sections covering the background of the inquiry, testimonies received, detailed findings, recommendations, and a concluding summary designed to guide government action.

He explained that the commission carefully reviewed financial documents, contract records, and payment vouchers, while also taking evidence from witnesses drawn from ministries, departments, agencies, and other stakeholders connected to the administration under investigation.

The commission chairman commended members of the panel for their dedication, professionalism, and integrity, noting that the assignment was carried out diligently and without fear or favour.

He also expressed appreciation to individuals and institutions that cooperated with the inquiry, saying their support was instrumental to producing a report aimed at safeguarding the long-term interests of Sokoto State.

Justice Pindiga added that the submission of the report aligns with broader national efforts to deepen democratic accountability, promote prudent management of public funds, and restore public confidence in governance.

Receiving the report, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto thanked the commission members for their commitment and sacrifice in handling what he described as a sensitive and demanding assignment.

The governor emphasized that the establishment of the commission was not driven by political vendetta but by constitutional responsibility and public trust.

He noted that the panel was mandated to ascertain facts through evidence based examination of records and testimonies, in line with due process.

Governor Aliyu further disclosed that a committee would be constituted to study the report and prepare a white paper, assuring that the process would be carried out with sincerity, fairness, and respect for the rights of all individuals mentioned in the report.
