Senegal’s talismanic captain, Sadio Mané, was deservedly named Player of the Tournament at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after inspiring his side to a dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The 33-year-old Al-Nassr forward, who has hinted that this could be his final AFCON appearance, received the Golden Ball award from CAF President Patrice Motsepe amid jubilant celebrations as Senegal secured their second continental crown.

Mané’s leadership, creativity, and big-game temperament proved decisive throughout the tournament.

He recorded two goals and three assists, created a competition-high 18 chances from open play, and reached a historic 20 AFCON career goal involvements, 11 goals, and nine assists since detailed records began in 2010.

In a tense and chaotic final, Mané also played a crucial calming role during stoppage time when Senegal briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a controversial penalty decision in Morocco’s favour.

He persuaded his teammates to return, helping the team regain focus before Pape Gueye’s spectacular extra-time strike sealed victory.

Despite the defeat, Morocco claimed individual honours. Real Madrid winger Brahim Díaz won the Golden Boot with five goals, finishing ahead of Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen, who both scored four.

Díaz was a constant threat, finding the net in four consecutive matches as Morocco reached their first AFCON final in 22 years.

Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou (Bono), was named Golden Glove winner following a series of outstanding performances, including decisive saves throughout the tournament and a composed display in the semi-final penalty shootout victory over Nigeria.
