The Kano Patriotic CSOs Coalition Forum (KPCF), a network of 262 civil society organisations in Kano State, has strongly criticised the Daily Trust lead story of Tuesday, 2 December 2025, titled “Kano: New Bandits Frontier,” describing it as misleading, sensational, and harmful to public confidence.
In a rejoinder jointly issued on Tuesday by the convener and co-convener of the coalition, Hassan Ibrahim Gama and Mustapha Muhammed Chiroma, respectively, KPCF said the publication was laden with exaggerated claims and distorted narratives capable of inducing fear, creating political tension, and discouraging investment in a state that remains one of the most peaceful in the country.
According to the coalition, the attempt by the newspaper to portray Kano as a new hotbed of banditry is “incorrect and not backed by empirical evidence.”
It noted that recent incidents recorded in a few border communities, particularly those sharing boundaries with Katsina, are spillover attacks affecting many northern states, not signs of a statewide security collapse.
The rejoinder highlighted ongoing security successes, including the neutralisation of several bandits in Shanono, rescue operations for kidnapped victims, and strengthened intelligence activities across border corridors. It stressed that the Kano metropolis has not recorded any banditry attacks.
The coalition faulted claims of a “breakdown” between the Kano State Government and the Nigeria Police, describing the insinuation as an attempt to politicise a sensitive security issue.
It explained that all security agencies, including the Police, Army, DSS, NSCDC, KAROTA, Hisbah and local vigilantes, maintain strong inter-agency collaboration.
The State Security Council, it added, continues to meet regularly, with the government providing vehicles, communication gadgets, and logistics support to federal security units operating in the state.
It further noted that the emirate issue referenced in the report has no connection to the ongoing security operations.
KPCF dismissed any suggestion that insecurity is crippling Kano’s business climate, noting that markets, industries, warehouses, and transport corridors are operating normally.
The coalition stated that no investor, local or international, has issued any advisory or raised concerns over safety in the state.
It cited enhanced night patrols, improved intelligence gathering, border monitoring, and strengthened enforcement of tricycle and motorcycle regulations as measures yielding results.
The coalition criticised the newspaper for failing to highlight recent joint security operations in border areas, the reinforcement of the 2013 motorcycle regulation, activation of emergency response units, increased deployment of security personnel, and community engagement efforts led by traditional rulers.
“Leaving out these facts created an unbalanced and alarmist story,” the statement said.
The coalition also faulted the use of phrases such as “new bandits frontier,” describing it as sensational and damaging to the morale of security forces, investor perceptions, and public trust.
It emphasised that the people of Kano have a long history of vigilance and resilience, noting the arrest of suspects at Kofar Ruwa as evidence of active community cooperation with security agencies.
The Forum maintained that Kano is not a “new bandits frontier” and urged media organisations to embrace responsible reporting, verify security claims with authorities, and consider the economic and psychological implications of alarmist narratives.
“Kano remains peaceful, vigilant, and united,” the coalition reaffirmed.
