Officials from the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) have visited Abubakar Yusuf Special Education School, Zarewa, in Rogo Local Government Area, as part of efforts to revive learning activities for pupils with special needs in the community.
The visit, which took place on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, was aimed at assessing the condition of the school for onward submission to the State Primary Education Board for necessary interventions and rehabilitation.
Established in 1989 during the administration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, the school was designed to provide access to basic education for children with special needs within their local communities.
However, the facility has suffered years of neglect and is currently in a deplorable state, with no active teaching or non-teaching staff.
According to reports, the school has only one special education teacher and a watchman, both of whom have already retired but continue to serve voluntarily.
During the inspection, the visiting SUBEB officials urged the Rogo Local Education Authority (LGEA) to urgently post new teachers and a security guard to the school.
They also noted the poor state of infrastructure, highlighting the absence of water supply, toilets, sleeping beds, and other basic amenities.
In response, the Zarewa Community Development Association, Parents Teachers Association (PTA), School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), traditional rulers, and other concerned citizens pledged to collaborate with the State Universal Basic Education Board and the Rogo LGEA to rehabilitate the facility.
They also expressed commitment to mobilizing parents and bringing back pupils to the school once teaching and learning activities resume.
Sani Shuaibu Rogo, Head of Academic Services at Rogo LGEA and a representative of the Concerned Citizens on Sustainable Educational Development, commended the board’s visit and emphasized the community’s determination to restore functional special education services in the area.
