Kylian Mbappe scored twice from the penalty spot as 10-man Real Madrid fought back to beat Marseille in their Champions League opener.

Real endured an early setback when Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off after just three minutes with a suspected hamstring injury, before Dani Carvajal—his replacement—was sent off in the 72nd minute for a clash with goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

Marseille took the lead in the 22nd minute through Timothy Weah, who blasted past Thibaut Courtois after Mason Greenwood dispossessed Arda Guler.

But Mbappe equalised six minutes later, calmly converting from the spot after Geoffrey Kondogbia fouled Rodrygo.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came close to restoring Marseille’s lead twice, but Courtois denied him. Real eventually sealed victory when Facundo Medina handled under pressure from Vinicius Jr, allowing Mbappe to bury his second penalty and claim his sixth goal in five games this season.

The 15-time European champions, managed by Xabi Alonso in his debut campaign, will next face Kairat in Kazakhstan on September 30, while Marseille host Ajax the same night.
