Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), through its Institute of Governance and Development Studies, has launched a four-week capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening social protection systems and promoting good governance across Nigeria.
The workshop was officially declared open by the NSUK Registrar, Dr. Bala Isyaka Ahmed II.
The program will run for four weeks, focusing on equipping participants with practical tools and strategies to drive sustainable, adaptive social protection in their respective states.
The workshop, which began on Monday at the university’s Assembly Hall, is themed “Sustainable Adaptive Social Protection.”
It brings together professionals from various fields, including monitoring and evaluation, management information systems, accounting, gender, and communications, for cross-sector learning and collaboration.
Speaking at the event’s opening, NSUK Vice-Chancellor Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman (Fellow, UNESCO; ACLS; FIIFP) highlighted the importance of the workshop in building institutional resilience and safeguarding vulnerable populations.
She praised the university’s development partners and facilitators for their contributions, reaffirming NSUK’s commitment to research, inclusivity, and social impact.
“Today’s challenges demand responsive systems that address evolving risks.
“As a knowledge hub, NSUK is proud to drive solutions for adaptive social protection and sustainable development,” Professor Liman said.
The workshop will focus on key areas, including rapid population targeting, digital payment systems, coordination and communication strategies, monitoring and evaluation, and grievance redress mechanisms.
Professor Andrew Zamani, outgoing Director of the Institute, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and facilitators.
At the same time, the incoming Director, Professor Terhemba Shija, stressed the urgency of strengthening capacities in the face of climate vulnerability, poverty, and social inequality.
He called for collective action to develop inclusive, sustainable protection systems that “leave no one behind.”
Workshop Coordinator Dr. Comfort A. Adokwe emphasized the need for innovative thinking and strong systems to tackle Nigeria’s social and economic challenges.
She urged participants to actively engage in sessions designed to sharpen technical skills and inspire transformative solutions.
Representing the National Programme Manager of the National Cash Transfer Office, Abubakar Al-Hassan Imam, a senior official from the office, commended the University for organizing the program, encouraging participants to maximize the opportunity to network and learn.
He reaffirmed the federal office’s commitment to advancing inclusive and accountable social protection systems nationwide.
