President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at about 4:30 p.m., after a prolonged illness.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his deep condolences to the former First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, during a personal call to commiserate with the family.

As part of the official arrangements, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late President back to Nigeria.

Buhari, who led Nigeria as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, had previously served as the country’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

In honor of the former leader, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-staff across the country.

Further funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the presidency and the Buhari family.
