Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, describing them as “unprovoked aggression” and pledging Russia’s support for the Iranian people.
Putin made the remarks during a meeting in Moscow on Monday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, just two days after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered coordinated strikes on three of Iran’s key nuclear sites.
“There is absolutely no justification for this act of aggression against Iran,” Putin said in a televised address. “We are making efforts to assist the Iranian people, and your presence here allows us to explore ways to resolve this crisis together.”
Araqchi, in response, defended Iran’s actions as legitimate self-defense and expressed gratitude for Russia’s stance. He also conveyed greetings from Iran’s Supreme Leader and President, stating, “Russia is on the right side of history and international law.”
While Russia has expressed strong diplomatic support, the extent of any practical assistance remains uncertain. A strategic cooperation agreement signed by Moscow and Tehran in January does not include a mutual defense provision.
Before the strikes, Russia had warned that U.S. military action could dangerously destabilize the region. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s concerns on Monday, saying the escalation could lead to far-reaching consequences.
“We strongly condemn these attacks and deeply regret the growing tension in the region,” Peskov said. “A new stage of escalation has begun, and it remains to be seen whether Iran’s nuclear facilities suffered damage that could pose a radiation threat.”
Peskov also confirmed that President Trump did not give advance notice of the strikes to Putin. “The issue of Iran was discussed in recent talks between the two presidents, and Russia made some proposals. But there was no detailed briefing on the planned military action,” he added.
Moscow has offered to mediate the crisis, with Peskov saying, “It all depends on what Iran needs. Our mediation itself is a form of support.”
The developments mark a new chapter in the strained relations between the U.S. and Iran, with Russia now positioning itself as a key player in efforts to de-escalate the situation.
