Due to its widespread appeal, afrobeats is now recognized in several international award programs, including the MTV Video Music Awards.
The 2024 VMA nominations have been revealed, and the Best Afrobeats category features a strong representation of Nigerian musicians.
Nominations were received for “City Boy” by Burna Boy, “Love Me Jeje” by Tems, and “Last Heartbreak Song” by Ayra Starr, featuring Giveon.
Thanks to his significant contributions to Usher’s song “Ruin,” Pheelz received a nomination in the Best Afrobeats category. South African singer Tyla received a nomination for her worldwide hit song “Water,” while Davido and Lojay were both recognized for their guest verses on Chris Brown’s “Sensational.”
Post Malone is next with nine nominations, behind global sensation Taylor Swift, who has ten. Eminem, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter are joint third with 6 nominations, respectively.
The 2024 VMAs will take place in the United States on September 11 at the USB Arena in New York.
