Nigerian Army officially retired 15 senior officers from its Artillery Corps during a ceremony held at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery (NASA) in Kachia Local Government Area, Kaduna State, on Saturday.
The event, which marked the transition of these officers from active service, included 11 Major-Generals and four Brigadier-Generals. Leading the event was retired Maj.-Gen. James Myam, who spoke on behalf of the retirees.
Reflecting on their service, Myam expressed gratitude for their time in the military. “Having come this far, we can only say that we feel highly fulfilled and give all the glory to the Lord God Almighty for His benevolent mercies, grace, and preservation over the years,” he said.
Myam also acknowledged the opportunity to serve the country, thanking President Bola Tinubu and Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. “We pray fervently for the Almighty God to continue to grant you the strength and wisdom to lead the Nigerian Army to greater heights,” he added.
Recounting their journeys, Myam said their military careers began at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna, where they first reported for officer cadet training. He offered advice to serving officers, urging them to stay loyal, vigilant, and committed to security duties.
He emphasized the importance of three qualities—empathy, proactiveness, and effective communication—which guided him throughout his military career. Myam also advised officers pursuing a military career to recognize the nation’s commitment to democratic governance, adding, “The era of military involvement in politics has gone for good.”
The retired general urged serving personnel to remain dedicated to the Nigerian Constitution and the democratically elected government. He highlighted the government’s efforts to equip the Armed Forces and called for understanding regarding the limited resources allocated across various sectors.
“We must understand that the demands of the Armed Forces form a small part of the many needs competing for government attention. As such, we should support government initiatives at all times,” Myam said.
He encouraged the officers to maintain their commitment to national security, praising the military’s successes against non-state actors and criminal elements across the country.
The retirees also extended their appreciation to their families, instructors, and mentors for their unwavering support. Myam expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army and the Artillery Corps, urging the “Gunners Family” to continue pursuing excellence.
The ceremony was attended by former Chief of Army Staff, retired Maj.-Gen. Alwali Kazir, along with other senior military officers, both serving and retired.
