One hundred widows in Rigachikun, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have become new homeowners following the completion and allocation of houses under the Adashe Women Housing and Empowerment Scheme.

The initiative, founded by Dr. Umma Sani and supported by Family Homes Funds and the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, marks one of the state’s most significant social housing efforts targeted at vulnerable women.

At the handover ceremony, Dr. Sani said her personal experience of growing up without stable shelter motivated her to support widows facing similar struggles.

She stressed that access to decent housing provides not only comfort but also the foundation for families, especially children, to thrive.

According to her, the 100-unit estate was made possible through strong collaboration between all partners.

“Today, 100 women now have a peaceful and secure place to raise their children. Adashe initiated the vision,

“Family Homes joined hands with us, and the Ministry of Budget and Planning gave their backing. We are grateful,” she said.

Beyond providing homes, Dr. Sani explained that the beneficiaries also received business training and starter packs to help them earn a sustainable income.

“Housing alone is not enough. We want these women to be independent,” she added.

She also announced plans to replicate the model nationwide. “This is only the beginning. Our aim is to ensure widows and orphans across all 36 states have safe shelter,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the Kaduna State Government, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing Development, Shehu Salisu, reaffirmed government commitment to increasing affordable housing for disadvantaged groups. He encouraged beneficiaries to take proper care of the estate.

Managing Director of Family Homes Funds Limited, Abdul Muktar, noted that similar projects are ongoing across the country. He urged the new homeowners to adopt a strong maintenance culture.

For many beneficiaries, the gesture was life-changing.

Mrs. Sarah Owojere, one of the recipients, said she had endured years of living in unsafe, flood-prone areas. “This home is an answer to my prayers,” she said.
