Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for political stability and improved governance in the state.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Communication in the Office of the Governor, Nuhu Salihu Anka, following extensive consultations with political stakeholders, elders, and supporters across Zamfara State.

According to the statement, the governor’s decision came after careful consideration and in the overriding interest of ensuring stability, progress, and sustainable development in the state.

The government explained that the move was influenced by the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP, as well as leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges at both the national and state levels.

“These challenges have continued to create uncertainty and distractions that could hinder effective governance and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Zamfara State,” the statement said.

Governor Lawal noted that his foremost responsibility remains the peace, security, and development of the state, adding that aligning with the APC would provide a platform for greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government.

The final deliberations leading to the governor’s defection were reportedly held at the Government House in Gusau under the coordination of the Deputy Governor, alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.

While expressing appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their cooperation and support over the years, Lawal said current political realities and the unresolved crisis within the party made it necessary to take the step in the interest of good governance and the future of the state.

The governor also reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity, improving security, accelerating development, and ensuring that Zamfara State benefits from stronger collaboration with the Federal Government.

The state government called on citizens, political leaders, party supporters, and other stakeholders to remain calm and peaceful as Zamfara enters what it described as a new political phase aimed at promoting unity, stability, and development.
