Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has disclosed that his administration inherited near-empty coffers with only about N9,000 left in one of the state’s bank accounts by the immediate past government.

This was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.

Speaking at the official distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the financial situation has now been reversed, with billions of naira currently available in government accounts.

He accused the previous administration of reckless financial mismanagement, including engaging over 128 tax consultants who failed to deliver meaningful results for the state.

“If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury to the extent that Kano was left indebted to banks,” he said.

The Governor emphasized that his government is prioritizing prudent resource management, blocking financial leakages, and ensuring that public funds are directed towards citizens’ welfare rather than leaders’ personal comfort.

“We have sacrificed our own comfort to make sure Kano’s money is spent on the people, not on leaders. That is our guiding principle and we will not compromise it,” Yusuf added.

Highlighting progress in education, Governor Yusuf pointed to Kano’s improved performance in the 2025 NECO SSCE examinations as proof of the administration’s investments.

He reaffirmed his commitment to channeling resources into education, healthcare, and infrastructure while maintaining transparency and accountability despite opposition criticism.
