In a replay of the European final from the previous season, Carlo Ancelotti’s team pulled off another incredible comeback at Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid once again performed Champions League magic on Tuesday, defeating Borussia Dortmund 5-2 and reviving their European campaign after falling behind 2-0 at halftime.
Although Vinicius Jr. was the Blancos’ best player of the evening, scoring the second, fourth, and fifth goals, Lucas Vazquez’s game-winning goal will be remembered as the highlight of an unforgettable evening.
After a back-and-forth first half, Dortmund took the lead. Donyell Malen slammed the ball home past a defenseless Thibaut Courtois after Serge Guirassy passed it through to him. Four minutes later, Jamie Gittens scored a second goal by slipping in at the back post to turn in Malen’s cross.
In response, Madrid launched a quick assault, although they did a pretty good job of failing to score. Jude Bellingham slammed a shot off the crossbar after missing a fantastic opportunity. Rodrygo also struck the woodwork, but Gregor Kobel’s full-stretch save prevented a bizarre deflection from infiltrating.
After the break, Madrid naturally woke up. The home team applied pressure after Nuri Sahin adopted a more conservative stance, and the front line purred. Vinicius buried the equalizer less than two minutes after Toni Rudiger had initially scored by heading home Kylian Mbappe’s cross.
After then, everything else seemed inevitable. After Vazquez scored a third goal, Vinicius added two more spectacular strikes to complete his hat-trick and seal another historic Champions League victory.
