US President Donald Trump was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize on Friday during the World Cup draw in Washington, recognized for his mediation in several international conflicts.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award, stating it honors an individual who exemplifies an “unwavering commitment to advancing peace and unity throughout the world through their notable leadership and action.”
He specifically lauded Trump for achieving results “in an incredible way.”
In accepting the award, Trump called it “truly one of the great honors of my life,” and cited his administration’s role in ending or averting multiple wars.
“So many different wars that we’re able to end, in some cases, a little bit before they started,” he stated. The award comes as Trump continues to advocate for the Nobel Peace Prize, leveraging his diplomatic record as a key part of his political narrative.
FIFA’s recognition references several diplomatic initiatives undertaken by the Trump administration.
These include brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitating an end to hostilities between India and Pakistan, and mediating agreements between Thailand and Cambodia, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The citation also mentions Trump’s intervention in a June conflict between Israel and Iran, where he claimed US strikes “decimated” Iran’s nuclear program, and his efforts to reduce tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia.
The creation and awarding of the FIFA Peace Prize to a sitting US president marks a significant, and likely controversial, foray by the global football governing body into geopolitical recognition.
The move is seen as aligning with Trump’s ongoing campaign to solidify a legacy as a peacemaker, even as many of the cited agreements remain fragile and subject to criticism.
The ceremony underscores the blending of international sports diplomacy with high-profile political endorsement.
