President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down from his position with immediate effect.

In a statement issued on Monday, Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Abubakar submitted his resignation letter dated 1 December 2025, citing health reasons for his decision.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation,” Onanuga said, adding that the President is expected to notify the Senate of the minister’s successor later this week.

Abubakar, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on 21 August 2023.

His resignation comes at a time President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details expected to be announced soon.
