At least three people, including two children, were killed when two passenger trains crashed in Egypt’s Nile Delta on Saturday, according to police.
The country’s railroad authorities released a statement stating that the accident occurred in Zagazig, the provincial capital of Sharqiya. According to Egypt’s Health Ministry, at least 40 more people were hurt in the crash.
In Egypt, mismanagement has afflicted an outdated railway infrastructure, leading to frequent train derailments and crashes. The government has announced plans to upgrade its railroads in recent years.
Around 250 billion Egyptian pounds, or $8.13 billion, will be required, according to President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in 2018, to completely renovate the nation’s dilapidated train system.
A train car was crumpled by the collision, as seen in footage from the scene. Men tried to lift the injured through the windows of a passenger car.
Last month, a train crashed into a truck crossing the train tracks in the Mediterranean province of Alexandria, killing two people.
